More Meet the Doula Action – this time in Round Rock!

Friends and mamas – we’re happy to announce we’re extending our fabulous Meet the Doula Night North for a two month engagement, at the BabyEarth store in Round Rock, Tuesday September 27th and Tuesday October 25th from 7-9pm.  All you Northern Suburb mamas no longer have to drive in rush hour dinner traffic to come find us in East Austin, we’re coming to you.  Central mamas – make the drive North – BabyEarth is awesome so come for the shopping, stay for the doulas.

And to make it more tantalizing, in addition to meeting all of us doulas, and finding out about all of our great services at Get Babied, we also have booked some killer speakers, ones you don’t want to miss.

Tuesday September 27th:

Michelle and Jim will be sharing the birth of their beautiful daughter Kate.  A successful VBAC!

Following Michelle’s birth story our guest speaker will be Liane McPherson, CNM, and midwife extraordinaire at Nurture OBGYN.  Liane will be discussing new advances in alternative pain control.  Sterile water papules and TENS machines have been widely studied and may be particularly useful for women with persistent back pain-both at the end of pregnancy (TENS) and during labor (both TENS & Sterile Water Papules). Great  low-tech alternatives with varied results  but statistically significant improvement in pain perception by the users. Device/technique, mechanism of action, risks and benefits, counseling & expectations will be discussed.

Then of course stick around for our ever famous doula speed dating session.  Doulas will be wo-manning stations around the meeting room, and you can move from one doula to the next in 3 minute intervals to ask any questions about our services, about doulas, about birth, anything you’d like!  Come early or stick around to shop, as guests at Meet the Doulas Night will get $10 off any purchase over $50 at BabyEarth.  Sweet!

Tuesday October 25th:

Sabrina shares the story of the birth of her second daughter Josephine with the doula support of De’Andrea, fearing a long labor similar to her first labor, Sabrina surprises us (and herself probably) with a 1 hour labor this time around!  She just had her baby this week so her story isn’t up on our blog just yet, but it will be soon, and you can come hear it live in October.

Our guest speaker is the newest on-call midwife at OB-GYN North, Siobhan Kubesh.  Siobhan will be speaking about incorporating research based medicine into a holistic based chidbirth experience.

We look forward to see y’all in Round Rock!

1 hour wait time for a 5 minute massage

August 12th, 2011

So that part was kind of crappy.  But that didn’t stop mamas and grandmamas and future mamas from lining up at our Get Babied booth at the Cedar Park Regional Medical Center Spa Day last weekend.  And as soon as we were rubbing their feet, every woman (and one man who sneaked past the bouncers) exclaimed it was worth the wait.  :)  Good to know our doula massage skills are prime!  Remember this when you ask us to massage you in labor – we have foot (and hand) massage skills!  :)  AS.

Line up out the door and around the building for spa day

Cary is waiting to rub some feet!

Our duckie and other schwag was gone in like 30 minutes

It's just a foot rub ladies. OK - it's the best foot rub ever.

PLUS-SIZE MOMMIES UNITE!

Release:  Immediate
Date: Bi-Monthly on Thursdays 6:30-8pm starting 6/16/2011 1825 E 38 1/2 st. Austin TX 78722

PLUS-SIZE MOMMIES UNITE!
(Austin, Texas) Get Babied! Doula collective is offering a new support group for plus-size mommies before, during, and after pregnancy!
Many of the concerns and issues plus-size pregnant mommies face are unique and different than most other moms.  There are a variety of misconceptions and a general lack of support for this specific group in the birthing and medical community…and beyond.  For example, many larger women are automatically deemed “high-risk” based on their size, not on their health.  Therefore they are sometimes only allowed at certain hospitals and even denied lower-risk birthing options, like having a birthing center experience, and frequently end up with C-sections and extra procedures by default, not necessity.
The purpose of this group is to create a safe haven for plus-size moms to share information and connect.  The group will be focused on providing emotional support and inspiration to plus-size mommies regarding topics like:
  • nutrition
  • pregnancy
  • preconception
  • fertility
  • PCOS
  • weight loss/gain
  • PPD
  • breastfeeding
  • natural childbirth
  • body image
  • how doulas can assist with plus-size pregnancies
This on-going group will meet at Get Babied! Doula Collective two Thursday evenings a month from 6:30-8pm.  The meetings will be led by Noelle, a new shadow doula at Get Babied and DeLora, Apprentice Doula at Get Babied .  There is no fee for this support group, but donations are welcome.  Healthy snacks and light refreshments will be provided.  If you are interested in attending a meeting, please send an email with your name and contact information to doulas@getbabied.com so that we can keep you updated regarding upcoming meeting dates, topics, and activities.

Keywords:

  • birth ball;
  • duration of labor;
  • labor pain management;
  • uterine contraction

Introduction: Anxiety can be a contributor to labor pain, which is known to be multifactorial. Because there is little information available on the efficacy of birth ball use for labor pain management, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of use of a birth ball on labor pain, contractions, and duration of the active phase of labor.

Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, 60 primiparous women aged 18 to 35 years were divided into birth ball and control groups. Pain scores were measured by a visual analogue scale.

Results: Mean pain scores in the birth ball group were significantly lower than the mean pain scores in the control group (P < .05). There were no significant differences between duration of the active phase of labor or the interval between uterine contractions in the 2 groups (P> .05).

Discussion: Although the use of a birth ball had no effect on the duration of the active phase of labor, the duration of uterine contractions, or the interval between contractions, this complementary treatment could reduce the intensity of pain during the active phase of labor.

Meet the Doulas!!

May’s Meet the Doula night was a HIT. We had a packed house full of expecting couples, wonderful guest speakers and it was the first MTDN in our NEW office! Hooray!

Don’t be sad that you missed the May event. Instead, make plans to attend the one in June. MTDN will return to its regularly scheduled spot, the last Saturday of the month, on June 25th.

We are so hoping you will attend. Why? Well, not only is Meet the Doula Night a great way to meet all the doulas in our wonderful collective but there will be some amazing guest speakers! There will also be snacks and who doesn’t love snacks?

The schedule:

645pm – guests arrive and sign in. Snacks will be available as a movie about Get Babied will be playing.

7pm – fun begins! The doulas of Get Babied speak about what we do, why doulas rock, why Get Babied rocks and the cost saving benefits of hiring a doula.

720pm – a couple will share their birth story!

730pm – a special guest speaker will help educate and inform Meet the Doula Night attendees.

745pm – the office is set up for speed dating and the doula speed dating begins! This is where we chat with most couples for several minutes. This gives couples a chance to meet as many of us as possible, ask questions, get a feel for all of our personalities and styles, etc…

9pm – It’s over! Everyone goes home and sleeps!

If you are already a client, we encourage you to come to as many MTDNs as possible! You can come after the Get Babied presentation or just for the speed dating part at 745pm. This gives us a chance to get an update on you and your pregnancy. It’s kind of like a free prenatal session, with snacks and guest speakers!

So, as you can see, Meet the Doula Nights are awesome. You should come! No registration required and you can bring kids! (We have some books and toys available).

Congratulations Megan!!

Preview of our new space

We look forward to having you at our first Meet the Doulas Night in our new space this month, and at our great big brunch-a-bration grand opening party in July.  But for now, here is a preview of our new digs.

Reception Desk

Here’s our reception area which you’ll see as you walk in the door.  And a glimpse of our storage area which has supplies for all of our great classes at the collective.

Waiting Area

And here’s where you can pull up a seat and wait for your massage or consultation or treatment.  Help yourself to a magazine or book from our bookstore in the corner.

Classroom and Common Room

And this is what you’ll find on the other side of those room dividers.  Classroom space for one of our many classes, and also open space for Meet the Doulas Nights, seminars put on by our partner practitioners, postpartum mama potlucks, and other future group goodies.

Classroom Floor Pillows

And here’s a shot of the classroom area from the other side of the room.  This wall is white so that we can project our presentations and videos on the walls for our classes and events.  Lots of floor pillows for comfy classes, as well as folding tables and chairs – totally functional and flexible for all of our goings on.

Treatment room 1

This is Treatment Room 1, the first of three.  This room is dedicated primarily to maternity massage and massage for our other friends and clients.  Steph and Sara use this room to get you to a peaceful and relaxed place.

Treatment Room 1

Here’s a second angle of treatment room 1, you can see our lovely calm blue color on the walls (the rest of the office is a lovely lemongrass green).

Consult Room

Here’s our consult room, set up with a sofa and chairs to be a comfy place for our doula consultations, prenatal and birth plan creation sessions, midwife consults, and lactation consults, as well as consults with our acupuncturist, massage therapists, and wellness practitioners.

Treatment Room 2

And here is our second treatment room, currently set up with a treatment table for massage or acupunture (or chiropractic? coming soon?) .  This room has a desk and shelves in addition to the treatment table and is a calm hummus color.

And here’s a video of me doing the full walk through.  Welcome to the new Get Babied!  AS.

Pump Mamas! Pump!

February 16th, 2011

If any of you have wee ones under a year and are breastfeeding, please consider becoming a milk donor to the Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin.

The Milk Bank is the second largest on the country and serves 52 hospitals nationwide. Your extra milk will help save fragile preterm or sick infants; babies unable to digest formula and are in critical need if Mother Nature’s most powerful prescription.

The freezers are critically low and demand continues to increase as 1 in 8 babies is born preterm.

If you will please share this with breastfeeding moms you know, it would be appreciated.
