May 7th, 2011
May 23, 2011
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

A $30 investment can save you almost $3000!

What?  Ridiculous you say?

Exclusively Breastfeeding your baby can save you almost $3000!

Cost of the ABM/Formula for 1 year...

Approximately $1930 or $160/month.

This number is only for the cost of the ABM and does not include the cost of bottles, nipples or liners.  This does not include the cost of bottled water or the time required to boil and cool the water before use.  This also does not include the time required to sterilize your bottles and nipples.

Cost of ABM use in terms of your time…

If making one bottle takes five minutes….
And basing time frames on scheduled feedings as follows:

Birth-2 weeks/ 2-3 oz. every 2-3 hours                        =  112-168 bottles
2 weeks-2 months/ 3-5 oz. every 3-4 hours                 =  270-360 bottles
2-4 months/ 5-6 oz. every4-6 hours                            =  240-360 bottles
4-5 months/ 8 oz. 8 times a day                                 =  120 bottles
5-6 months/ 8 oz. 4 times a day                                 =  120 bottles
6-7 months/ 8 oz. 4 times a day                                 =  120 bottles
7-8 months/ 8 oz. 4 times a day                                 =  120 bottles
8-12 months/ 8 oz. 3 times a day                               =  360 bottles

Total bottles in one year                                           =  1462-1728

This comes to 7310-8640 minutes or 123-144 NON STOP hours.
Broken down to 8 hour days this is one month out of a year just making bottles…

If you are paid minimum wage then the cost in terms of your time is…
$7.25 (federal minimum wage) X 123-144 hours =
$891.75-$1044.00

Parents can save themselves almost $3000 just by breastfeeding for the first year!!!

Join me May 23rd at our Breastfeeding Basics class and turn your $30 investment into a $3000 savings!

May’s Memorable Meet the Doula Night

May 21, 2011
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

Meet the Doula Night for April was awesome! There was food, there was a birth story, there was laughter…sigh, just thinking about it makes me long for another Meet the Doula Night.

Well, I won’t have too long to wait and neither will you! Our MTDN in May will not be the last Saturday of the month. Due to Memorial Day Weekend and everybody’s preference for BBQs, tanning on a boat, swimming and hanging out with friends, we decided to host Meet the Doula Night on May 21st! Yay! Three (ish) weeks! Not only is the date moved, so is our office!! So May’s MTDN will be historic as it will be our first one in our new space, 1825 E 38 1/2 St. 78722. It’s big, it’s comfy, it’s ours!

Here’s the scoop: Are you thinking about having a doula support you and your partner during birth and postpartum? Don’t know what a doula does? Don’t know the cost or if your insurance will cover doula services? If you head out to our new office, all these questions can be answered. You will hear the doulas at Get Babied talk about who we are, what we do, etc…Then there’s a birth story and a guest speaker. Oh yeah, and free snacks and drinks!

Even if you are already a client, MTDN still benefits you. It’s like a free prenatal assessment with the doulas. The more you can attend, the better you get to know all the doulas and we get to answer any questions or concerns you might have. It’s totally a win-win scenario.

Ok, enough fluff. Down to May’s MTDN schedule:

645pm to 7pm: Guests arrive, sign in, get a name tag and folder, get snacks and settle in.

At 7:00 The Get Babied Doulas begin their presentation on who we are, what we do, information about classes and packages, etc…

At 7:15 special guests Leslie & Brad will share the birth story of their daughter, Elisabeth. You can read about Leslie’s stoic composure during transition and pushing here: http://www.getbabied.com/2011-03-21/a-most-impressive-birth-story

At 7:30 Margery Segal will be speaking about Therapeutic Movement for Prenatal Care. Follow up informational blog coming soon!

At 7:45 we will have a doula “speed dating” session – each of the Get Babied doulas will be assigned a number and you can jump in and start talking to any doula for about 3 to 5 minutes. Then a lovely gong will sound as a signal to move onto the next doula station. This way you get to meet as many doulas as possible.

For those of you who have attended MTDN in the past – you’re most welcome to skip the early part and just join us at 7:45. During this time, you’ll have our ear for any other questions or concerns that may have surfaced in the last month about your pregnancy, labor, delivery or postpartum care.  MTDN is also a great place to turn in pending paperwork or make payments in person.

If you are unable to make it to MTDN – please email us (doulas@getbabied.com) to schedule a free private 30 minute consult at your convenience during our office hours.  The advantage to MTDN of course is you get all 10 of us at once.

Hope to see all of you there!

Meet the Doula Night Extravaganza!

April 30, 2011
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

Oh darn. You just missed the latest Meet the Doulas Night! It was the last weekend in March. Oh well…wait! You should totally come to the Meet the Doula Night (MTDN) in April! Yes! There will be snacks, a couple sharing their birth story and a local midwife guest speaker!

So, even if you are new to the Get Babied world or if you are already a client, we highly recommend you (and your partner) to attend MTDN! As you probably have gathered, we doulas work together in this collective; meaning we work in an on-call rotation. When you go into labor, whoever is on call at that time is your doula. The best way to get know all the doulas is attending Meet the Doula Night. You can meet most of the doulas at the variety of classes we offer, etc…but MTDN is free! And there are snacks! And speakers! And birth stories! It’s like a little fiesta with some doula speed dating thrown in.

Ok, enough fluff. Down to April’s MTDN schedule:

At 7:00 we gather next door to our office at Neighborhood Acupunture Project (they have more space than we do) for a short presentation on what doulas do in general, and what we do at the Get Babied Doula Collective specifically.

At 7:15 special guests Mary & Jason share the story of the birth of their baby Lillian Beatrice with Ame as their doula.  You can read about their amazing management of pitocin here:

At 7:30 local midwife Brielle Epstein will be speaking about how to have a Blessing Circle Ceremony to honor your pregnancy. See: http://moonstonebirth.com/blog/2011/04/06/creating-a-blessing-circle-blessingway/ and http://www.getbabied.com/2011-04-06/blessing-circle-mother-blessing-overview for more information on Blessing Circle ceremonies.

Speed dating gives you an opportunity to have a more intimate dialog with us and talk with us more personally.  We also want to check in with you since last month to see what is happening in your pregnancy.  We consider this more like a “free prenatal appointment” with snacks and entertainment.

If you answered, “Yes!” to any of these questions, then Cliffs Notes for Dads is for you! Please join us on Monday, Feb 7th from 7-9pm at the Get Babied!
