Every Woman Deserves A Doula!

February 9th, 2012 by jenni

Birth, from early labor to delivery, can be a time of wonder, excitement, awe and is intensely emotional.  For some women this can be a time of great joy and love.  For others this time can be frightening, confusing, and overwhelmingly lonely.

A doula’s role is to help make a laboring woman feel encouraged, supported and nourished both physically, emotionally and sometimes spiritually.  Not only is it our job but our passion and our calling.

Every woman DESERVES a doula!

“After a traumatic first birth experience, I’m taking HypnoBirthing this time around, and with making the switch to out of hospital birth I can no longer afford the price of a doula.  I really would like all the support I can get. “

“We really want a doula for our birth, but unfortunately I ended up going into some preterm labor this past week and have been put on bedrest. Since I won’t be working we can’t afford a solid maternity leave and have had to reluctantly cut the extra expenses so we will not be able to have a doula at our birth.”

“I’m on Medicaid, and the expense of a doula is a concern for me.”

“I’m giving this baby up for adoption, surely the adoptive parents will be there to support me!  And besides, I can‘t afford to have a doula anyway…”

“My husband and I are very interested in natural childbirth and would love to enlist the help of a doula this time around. However, my husband is in his 3rd year of law school at UT and I’m only able to work part-time as I stay home and care for my 3-year old daughter. If possible, we’d love to find a doula that isn’t limited by our financial situation.”

“I don’t have any health insurance, and I got denied for medicaid so the bills are really starting to stack. My doctor recently suggested I look into a doula to try to avoid a costly epidural.”

“I’m a single mama, I was a teacher, but after they found out I was pregnant (or by coincidence – who can say) I was laid off from my job.  I’m very educated about birth and know the support of a doula will make a drastic difference in my life, particularly considering the father is out of the picture and the rest of my family lives out of state.  Do you have any options for me?”

“I’m a surrogate…this birth isn’t about me.  Besides that‘s another expense for the parents.”

There are so many reasons why some women decide they cannot afford a doula.  Primarily finances are a concern and paired with special circumstances women find themselves cutting a doula from their birth budget.

At The Get Babied Foundation we believe that finances and special circumstances should not prevent women from being supported by a doula at their birth!

The GBF is a registered non-profit in Texas, and our goal is to provide scholarships to women who cannot afford a doula.  100% of money collected in the foundation is allocated to the women in need, in order for them to realize their birth plan goals.  The wonderful doulas on the Get Babied Apprentice team serve the women that apply for this fund, and are compensated their regular apprentice doula rates (when there is money in the foundation coffer) or by a free love offering (if there isn’t).

We need your help.  There are so many women in Austin that can use our help and support, and we want to extend our care to all walks of life.

With your donation we can!
